Polyjuice Potion allows the taker to assume the physical appearance of another person. The potion takes a month to brew, and must include part of the person you wish to look like.

It must be extremely useful to appear to be someone else. The potion is remarkably comprehensive in its actions; the false Moody, transformed by the potion, is missing an eye and a leg, and these grow back when he is deprived of the potion. In fact, one assumes they must grow back each night, as the effects of the potion last only an hour. One must question whether the suppressed limb must be exercised to avoid it atrophying... did the false Moody have to exercise each day in his normal shape to avoid the effects of nine months without moving the suppressed leg?

The process of changing to a new shape by means of the potion is described as being quite painful, while the reversion to original self is so painless that neither Ron nor Harry notices it happening in themselves. As the false Moody was not apparently in pain when he drank from his hip flask (which contained, apparently, the Polyjuice Potion that retained his appearance), we can assume that it is the process of changing that is painful; maintenance in the unnatural shape should be much less so.

The Polyjuice potion is a complicated potion and is out of bounds for students to brew other than in classes. Students are forbidden to brew potions like these in Hogwarts.

The Polyjuice Potion allows the drinker to appear to be another person for a set time, most commonly an hour. Its ingredients include fluxweed, knotgrass, lacewing flies, leeches, powdered Bicorn horn, shredded Boomslang skin, and, most importantly including a bit of the person that the drinker wishes to turn into, e.g. a strand of hair. Its taste and appearance seem to depend on the person.

"Sorry i'm late professor"
"I lost track of time, and i kind of got lost." Ron said while giving a smile.

And gave professor snape a small paper that had wrighting on it.

Work-

Polyjuice Potion: Is a very very complicated potion that allows the drinker to assume the form of someone else. While it can account for both age and gender, Polyjuice Potion cannot be used for a human to take an animal form or for a half-breed to reassume the human form.
It's Difficulty level is very advanced. A piece of the person who is to be imitated (usually hair) is needed for the transformation. Before this final ingredient is added, Polyjuice looks like thick, dark mud that bubbles slowly. When the piece of the person to be imitated is added, however, the potion changes colour; it seems to react according to the nature of the person to be imitated, once even described as the 'essence' of the person.Good-hearted people result in more attractive colours and tastes, while mean people cause the opposite effect. The effects of the Polyjuice potion lasts for an hour.
the potion cannot be used by a non-human or half-breed individual to turn into a human, as Remus Lupin informed the half-giant Rubeus Hagrid. However, it seems that individuals whose non-human ancestry is less than half can successfully use Polyjuice, as quarter-Veela witch Fleur Delacour transformed into Harry Potter. However, it is also possible Lupin meant that a person cannot transform into a half-breed using Polyjuice Potion, but half-breeds themselves can.
